The Only Harley Quinn Makeup Tutorial You Need for Halloween

Few Halloween costume ideas are more timeless and easy to put together than Harley Quinn. Not only are her painted pigtails and smudged lipstick ripe for Instagram; they also don’t require the patience or skill needed for most Halloween makeup. Plus, with Joker smashing box office records, going as Gotham’s bad girl this year feels particularly of the moment.

So with that in mind, we teamed up with makeup artist Lijha Stewart (also known as the Queen of Halloween) to break down all the advice you need to nail Harley Quinn’s makeup. Read on for the full step-by-step tutorial.

How to DIY Harley Quinn Makeup

Level of difficulty: Easy. If you can smudge on some makeup and throw your hair into pigtails second-grade-style, you’ll be able to do this no problem.

Amount of time required: One hour, max.

What you’ll need:
-Your favorite matte foundation
-A contour stick
-Matte, loose powder
-Highlighter
-A rosy blush
-Your brow product of choice
-Red and blue eyeshadow
-Black and white eyeliner pencils
-Red and blue eye glitter (optional)
-Scotch tape (optional)
-False eyelashes (optional)
-Red lipstick
-Cotton swabs
-Black liquid eyeliner
-Red and blue hair chalk or hair paint

Step 1: Contour and highlight.

Even though Harley’s skin is really pale in the movie, to make it more lifelike and wearable, we contoured in a few key areas. Swipe a sculpting stick down your cheekbones, at your hairline, underneath your lips, and on your collar bones. Blend it out with your fingers or a buffing brush.

In an effort to still capture that angsty, washed-out look, set everything with a matte, loose powder and keep the highlighting to a strategic minimum, placing it only in certain places like underneath your brow bone and in the inner corner of your eyes.

Step 2: Accentuate your brows.

For light or scarce brows, “it’s best to start with a brow wax so that any color you put on after sticks,” says Stewart. With a spoolie brush, apply a light coating of the wax, and brush hairs upward and outward. Then, with an angled brush, apply your desired shade in light strokes.

Step 3: Smudge on eyeshadow.

The trick to getting eyes like Harley Quinn’s isn’t in how you smudge your shadow—it’s about the pigment you use. While regular shadows are great and can sometimes offer intense color payoff, it’s best to opt for a cream here. You can literally smudge it on with your fingers if you’d like, but laying it on with a medium-size eye shadow brush will do just fine. To get that splattered effect, take whatever color is left on your brush from the initial application and drag it outward and downward. Oh, and don’t forget to use two different brushes for your red and blue. Mixing them will make both colors muddy—not the look you’re aiming for here.

When you’re done creating your shape, layer matching eyeshadow over your base to set the look. You might also find it easier to blend any harsh smudges out with your powder shadows.

Step 4: Add dimension to your eyes.

To add some dimension to your eyes, line them with a thin coat of black eyeliner and smoke out the edges to create a sultry effect. Then pick up a tiny amount of black shadow and wiggle a blending brush in the outer corners. To top it off, add white pencil to your waterline for a doll-like effect.

Step 5: Layer on glitter.

Now for the messy but most fun part: glitter! Once you have your blue and red pigments handy, first and foremost, wet a flat shadow brush. You’ll want to do this each time before dipping it into the glitter so there’s minimal fallout. When applying your glitter, take your time and keep wetting your brush. Pat it on gently and follow the shape you already made with your eye shadow—no need to get creative here. Pro tip: If any flecks fall out of place, clean them up by using Scotch tape.

When you’re satisfied with the level of sparkle you’ve achieved, apply mascara and (optional) add lashes. (Our cheat sheet on applying falsies, here.)

Step 6: Apply red lipstick and draw on tattoos.

Almost done! When choosing your red lipstick, opt for a creamy, cherry red that will move around easily. Apply it like normal, then take your finger or a small shadow brush to sweep the color on the lower bottom lip downward. Then blot. Apply another layer of red on top for shine as desired.

Now for the tattoos. Because of its intensity and easy-to-use applicator, a black felt-tipped eyeliner works best when drawing on shapes and words. Draw the outline of a heart underneath your eye, right on the apple of your cheek. Don’t worry if you mess up—just make sure to have a cotton swab and concealer handy to clean up wonky edges.

For the “Rotten” tattoo, we advise having a friend write it on, simply because doing it on yourself in a mirror means it’ll show up backward. (Remember Karen’s rhinestone “K” in Mean Girls? Yeah, that’s what happens when you try to write stuff in a mirror.)

Step 7: Spray on hair color.

Last but not least: Those classic Harley Quinn pigtails. If you don’t have blond hair, there are tons of Harley Quinn wigs out there you can use. But if you’ve got blond hair already, it’s a cinch to DIY. And there are a few different ways to get the look.

First thing’s first: Put your hair up in pigtails. (Curl them first, if you want them to be extra bouncy.) Then you can either opt for hair color chalk or hair color spray. Warning: All will be messy, but if you spritz hairspray on top, your color should be set for a few hours. Also, it might be a good idea to wear rubber or plastic disposable gloves when applying it.

For hair chalk, rub your strands through it until the color is dark enough for you. You might have to do a few rounds before real pigmentation starts to show. As for the hairspray, definitely do this in your bathroom—standing in the shower is optimal. In order not to get hair paint everywhere, have a piece of white paper nearby to tuck behind your head when spritzing.

Harley Quinn costumes are trending for Halloween, but this is the only Harley Quinn makeup tutorial you need. Read on for our easy how-to steps.

Harlequin Makeup

Harlequin makeup may be romantic, comedic or tragic, depending on which look you’re after. It’s a unique look for costume parties, but if you’re in theater, you probably need to know how to apply your own makeup to transform yourself into this funny clown.

The Harlequin Clown

The harlequin clown, which started out as a jolly trickster, is sometimes seen as a sad little figure, not like the cheery, full-of-smiles circus clowns who do anything for a laugh. Your harlequin makeup look may depend on which type of harlequin you wish to portray.

Hallmarks of harlequin clown makeup include:

  • White face
  • Heart details
  • Triangular details, often upside-down and under the eyes
  • Red, Cupid’s bow lips

In addition, the harlequin outfit is very colorful and full of whimsy. Bright diamond or triangular patterns often define this clown’s outfit.

How to Apply Harlequin Makeup

Regular cosmetics probably won’t be thick or long-lasting enough to produce a great harlequin makeup look, so look for stage makeup to create this funny face.

Traditional

The traditional harlequin makeup look consists of a red and black face, not the white background so popular today. The original harlequin clowns used a mask, but you can easily recreate this look with makeup.

  1. Lightly outline your face with a pencil that matches your skin tone. Keep the line about 1-inch in from the outer edges of your face and work on creating a circular shape.
  2. Draw a line down the center of your face with the same pencil.
  3. Color in one side of your face with red stage paint, except for an upside-down triangle shape beneath the eye.
  4. Color the other side with black stage paint, leaving an upside-down triangle under the eye clear.
  5. On the red side of your face, color in the triangle black. Repeat this in red for the black half of your face.

This harlequin makeup will best complement a traditional red and black clown outfit.

Other Variations

Today’s harlequin is more often portrayed with a white face. You can be creative when designing this look, but the two ideas below may give you a starting point if you want to create a more complex face.

Simple

  1. Color the entire face with white paint. This layer doesn’t need to be especially heavy, but your skin shouldn’t peek through.
  2. With a thin pencil, draw a rounded arch above both eyebrows.
  3. Draw a tear shape in black under the outer corner of one eye. Highlight with a dab of white to add depth.
  4. Color in two red circles on the center of cheeks. Draw the circle in first with a pencil to make sure it’s perfectly round.
  5. In the center of your lips, draw a Cupid’s bow shape. Don’t extend the pencil to the outer corners of your mouth; your entire mouth won’t be painted.
  6. Color in the bow shape with red lipstick or paint.

Moderately Complex

  1. As above, begin with a white background.
  2. Draw a line in black across your brow from temple to temple.
  3. Draw a line parallel to the first line across the middle of the nose, from one ear to the other.
  4. Between the two lines, color in diamond patterns. The easiest way to do this is to draw diagonal lines first in one direction and then criss-cross them in the other direction.
  5. Color in the diamonds in alternating colors of black and white, or use many harlequin colors, such as deep purple, gold, blue, green and red.
  6. Outline the mouth in red. At the corners of the lips, curve the line down slightly.
  7. Color the lips red.

Being a Clown

Once you perfect your harlequin makeup technique, complete the look with the right outfit. This clown ensemble may be red and black, or it may be full of colors. A pointed hat will finish off the look well. Now you’re ready to be Harlequin, that clever and funny jokester who loved nothing more than a good laugh.

Harvest time might seem like the final stage in the growing process, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. After you’ve harvested the fruits of your labour, it’s time for the most vital steps of them all: drying and curing.

Drying is just as it sounds—it’s the process of removing the majority of the water content from your buds. This will make them easier to handle, more resilient against mould formation, and a lot more pleasant to smoke. Some growers are happy to blaze dried buds, but if you want to take the flavour and potency of your harvest to the next level, you’ll need to cure them.

WHY CURE YOUR CANNABIS BUDS?

Patience is a virtue in all areas of life, and it certainly pays off when curing cannabis. Curing is a prolonged process that can take weeks to complete. It might seem like a hassle at first, but the reality is that curing will turn harsh buds into ones that offer a smooth and delicious smoke. This is because prolonged curing leads to the degradation of byproducts produced by the drying process, such as sugars. These molecules leave a particularly harsh and unpleasant taste in the mouth. Curing banishes these compounds, resulting in a buttery smooth smoke.

Curing also preserves desirable flavours. The molecules that give cannabis strains their intense and unique flavours are known as terpenes. These volatile compounds can degrade easily under high heat, so gentle drying followed by prolonged curing is the way to go for tasty buds.

Taste isn’t the only thing that curing can accomplish. The process can also enhance the high itself. THC, the active psychotropic constituent in cannabis, degrades over time into a cannabinoid known as CBN. CBN is thought to be mildly psychoactive, but is associated with different effects than THC.

Curing will also greatly enhance the shelf life of your harvest and further minimise cases of mould. If cured and stored correctly, your buds can last for a year or longer without any decline in taste or strength.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE CURING PROCESS

Before we get into exactly how to cure your cannabis buds, let’s discuss some of the factors that influence the process. This will help you gain a firm understanding of what to aim for and what to avoid.

1. AVOID LIGHT EXPOSURE

During the curing process, you’ll need to keep your stash in a dark location. Light is one factor that can lead to the degradation of valuable molecules such as THC and terpenes. To avoid having light spoil the taste and potency of your flowers, keep your jars in a dark cupboard or box. Alternatively, storing your buds in miron glass jars, a type of glass that filters out all visible light apart from violet, will offer additional protection.

2. PROTECT YOUR STASH FROM HEAT

Heat will only be a substantial issue if you live in a climate where it becomes exceptionally hot. Heat is another factor that can lead to the degradation of cannabinoids, potentially reducing the potency of your buds. Be sure to keep your jars in a cool location to minimise damage and mould formation. An ideal room temperature for curing is around 21°C.

3. FIND THE HUMIDITY SWEET SPOT

Curing is a straightforward process considering you start with properly dried buds. If your stash is too wet before curing, buds will clump together and there’s a good chance that mould will take hold. Increased moisture will also encourage anaerobic bacteria to start breaking down your stash. A telltale sign this is happening is the smell of ammonia emerging from your jars every time you open them.

On the flip side, curing bud that is too dry will create a crumbly and harsh stash that isn’t pleasant to smoke. Ideally, cannabis flowers should be dried in a room with a humidity of between 45–55%. This will result in a dry and slightly crumbly exterior and a more humid interior. Once it comes time for curing, humidity is increased slightly to an ideal reading of around 62%.

THE BEST WAY TO CURE YOUR CANNABIS BUDS

Now that we’ve discussed these vital factors, keep them in mind as you proceed to cure your stash. In reality, curing is simply a matter of opening and closing jars at the correct time. By placing your dried cannabis flowers into airtight glass mason jars, you’ll be creating an optimally controlled environment. These enclosed vessels allow humidity from within the flowers to rehydrate the exterior, without buds becoming overly wet. The end goal is a stash that smokes smooth and offers superior tastes.

STEP 1

To begin the process, you’ll need to prepare your flowers accordingly. If you dried your buds individually, you’re good to go. If you elected to dry them by the branch, then you’ll need to get trimming. Separate each bud and rid them of sugar leaves.

STEP 2

Next, you’ll need to place your stash into airtight containers. Mason jars provide a sturdy option and allow growers to easily monitor their buds throughout the process.

Place the buds loosely into the container and fill to 75% capacity. It’s important to leave room for air. Now is a good time to test if your stash is dry enough for curing. Give the jars a gentle shake. If your buds rattle around the glass freely, then continue with the next steps. If they begin to clump together, this is a sign the exterior is still too wet and further drying is required.

STEP 3

Apply the lids to your jars and place them in a cool and dark location to protect against the threats mentioned above. Ideally, place them in a cupboard or other storage room that maintains a temperature of 21°C and a relative humidity of 60–65% within the jars. The only way to accurately measure this is to add a small hygrometer (a device that measures humidity) to each jar.

STEP 4

During the first couple of days, you’ll need to check on your buds around twice per day. Inspect them through the glass and keep a careful eye on any mould formation. You’ll also need to open the lids for a couple of minutes each time you check to allow for fresh air exchange. Keep an eye on your hygrometers. If the reading displays 60–65% humidity, continue as normal. If things are getting too wet, leave the lids off the jars for around 3 hours to let excess moisture escape. If humidity is too low, leave the lids on for longer periods without breathing sessions. If you still don’t notice any increase in humidity, place a small humidity pack inside the affected jars.

STEP 5

Continue to open the jars once per day over the next 2 weeks while taking appropriate measures to maintain optimal humidity. After 3 weeks, your buds will be well cured and ready to smoke up. However, the more patient smokers out there will receive the best rewards. Your flowers will continue to increase in quality for up to 6 months of curing.

Curing is a long and tedious process for many growers, but results in a buttery smooth smoke and enhanced flavour. Learn how to do it properly here.

Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Jar Curing Cannabis

by Jen Keehn – May 9, 2018

There’s nothing quite like growing your own cannabis crop. Whether you’ve got one plant or one-hundred, drying and curing your weed is paramount to the quality of your product. Curing your crop takes time. And while it can be tempting to try to dry your buds as quickly as possible, curing them properly will ensure your harvest is the best it can possibly be.

There are several ways to cure a harvest once it has been cut down, but jar curing is one of the most popular methods amongst experienced growers. When done correctly, jar curing will make your finished product not only more potent but will make it last, keeping it fresh for months to come.

If you’re new to the growing scene, we salute you. Whether you’re growing cannabis inside or outdoors, it’s one of the most rewarding experiences ever. Here’s all you need to know about jar curing cannabis, a small but crucial step in the entire growing process.

Why Curing Your Cannabis is So Important

Proper Curing Increases THC Content

When your plant is finished growing, the production of cannabinoids doesn’t stop. When you cut your plants down, ensuring that you dry and cure them properly will ensure that THC content increases for the maximum potency of your pot.

Curing Will Enhance Aroma, Flavor, and Quality

All cannabis is not created equal. When you cure your cannabis, aroma, flavor, and quality are all enhanced, leaving you with the quality bud you worked so hard to grow. It also allows for the breakdown of sugars and any minerals that remain, ensuring you don’t get a harsh smoke that’s hard on the throat and lungs.

Curing Preserves Cannabis

Depending on how much you smoke (and how much you grew), your harvest can keep you high for a long time to come. Properly curing your cannabis can ensure it’s persevered, keeping cannabinoid content high and avoiding any issues with mold. It’s not unheard of for properly cured cannabis to last up to two years or more.

Properly Drying Your Cannabis Prior to Jar Curing

The first step of jar curing cannabis is to ensure you properly dry your buds. After cutting your plants down you’ll need to let them dry before curing. There are a couple different methods of drying your plants, depending on whether you decide to wait and trim your buds when they’re dry or trim them immediately after cutting them down when they’re wet.

Dry Trimming vs. Wet Trimming

Most experienced growers wait until plants are dry before they begin trimming, which ensures that the plants don’t dry out too quickly and the quality of the bud is maintained. Plants are hung upside down either on metal hangers or long string that is stretched tightly across the room being used for dying. Once they are dry, buds are trimmed before being placed in curing jars.

Some growers use a method known as “wet trimming”, where the fan leaves and other leaves and stems on the bud are trimmed when the plant is cut down. This method can be especially beneficial for larger crops where there is a lot of weed that needs to be trimmed. Buds that have been wet trimmed are usually placed in drying racks until they’re ready to be cured.

Drying Your Buds

Whatever method you decide on for drying your cannabis before jar curing, it’s essential to keep drying buds in a dark room (no direct sunlight) with temperatures around 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity levels should be kept at 45-55%. A small fan should also be kept on in the room to ensure the proper circulation of air flow.

Drying cannabis takes around 5-15 days. Your buds are ready for jar curing when they’re completely dry. If your buds aren’t dry enough when you put them into the jar to cure, you risk developing mold and ruining your crop.

Knowing they’re ready can be tough for the beginner grower to gauge. Using the “snap test” (when the small branches snap instead of fold when you bend them) is a good way to know when they’re good to go. Buds should also be somewhat crisp on the outside.

What is Jar Curing?

Once your buds have properly dried and trimmed, it’s time to begin the jar curing process. Jar curing cannabis has been a grower’s go-to for decades and is one of the most popular ways to properly cure cannabis.

Wide-mouth mason jars are typically the most commonly used method of jar curing, but other glass jars with a tightly sealing lid can also be used. You can also use plastic containers, although curing in jars is typically preferred.

Some growers will use large plastic bags to cure their cannabis, but the majority of plastic bags aren’t conducive to a proper cure. Oxygen can’t flow properly in plastic. When it comes in contact with terpenes and oils present in the buds, the plastic can also break down potentially tainting your crop with plastic particles.

After all the work you did to grow your weed in the first place, making sure you cure it properly only makes sense. Glass jars are the way to go if you want a quality finished product.

4 Steps to Properly Jar Curing Cannabis

Step 1:

Dried, trimmed buds should be packed loosely in the jar until it is approximately 2/3 full. Lids should be sealed tightly, and containers placed in a cool, dark space (closets work excellent for jar curing).

Step 2:

The first week of dry curing is vital for success. You will need to open each jar at least three times each day for about 5-10 minutes. This lets your buds breathe and replaces any lost oxygen inside the jar. Opening your jars a few minutes each day during the first week also allows any moisture to escape, ensuring your buds don’t develop mold.

Step 3:

Have patience. Curing your cannabis takes time. After the first week, jars should only be opened every few days. Let them breathe for 5-10 minutes and then tightly replace the lid and return jars to their cool, dark curing space.

Step 4:

Letting your cannabis jar cure for 2-3 weeks is usually enough time to make sure your harvest is top quality. Have the patience to let your buds cure longer? Curing them for 4-6 weeks or longer can make your finished product even better.

Curing cannabis correctly is one of the most important parts of growing your own stash. Unfortunately, it’s also something often overlooked, ruining many a potentially amazing crop. When you take the time to properly jar cure cannabis, you’re ensuring you end up with a quality finished product you can be proud of.

Whether you’ve got one plant or one-hundred, drying and curing your weed is paramount to the quality of your product. Here's how to do it. ]]>
