10 Recipes to Make with Hemp Seed Oil

Today we’re talking hemp seed oil—this lovely green oil is loaded with nutrients and awesome fatty acids, making it a super awesome ingredient to DIY with. It’s a liquid oil with a melting point of -8°C (18°F), and is available in refined and unrefined versions—I usually get unrefined. Hemp seed oil is rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as linoleic and gamma-linoleic fatty acids. It contains calcium, potassium, and magnesium, as well as vitamins B6 and E. With this lovely laundry list of good-for-you ingredients it’s not hard to see why you’d want to include it in just about everything.

Thanks to its high omega content, hemp seed oi is sensitive to heat and prone to rapid oxidization, so I recommend purchasing it in small quantities, storing it in the fridge, and not exposing it to direct heat when melting it together with other ingredients—always use a water bath. If you’ve worked with flax seed oil before, you’ll have a good idea of what you’re looking at in terms of storage and shelf life.

Pressed from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, hemp seed oil can have some marijuana-type associations as the plants are related, but hemp contains extremely low (and completely unnoticeable—Canadian hemp seed oil is usually below the 4 ppm detection limit) amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound that gives marijuana its reputation. Making brownies with hemp oil definitely won’t make them “special”—not in that way, at least! Those brownies would probably have a bit of a grassy flavour and would be rich in omega fatty acids, and I guess that could be called special 😜

Hemp seed oil feels utterly lovely on the skin. It is silky and smooth, and glides across the skin beautifully, leaving a silky smooth finish that’s not too oily and not at all sticky. I’d say it has an average absorption speed. If you’re looking for a replacement, olive oil has a similar feel and green hue, but definitely can’t stack up when it comes to fatty acid composition. Alright—let’s dive into the recipes!
