How long does it take to seed?

Hi all, I’m not sure where to put this question about seeding

I get the jist of seeding and I don’t want to just be a leacher. I downloaded a game yesterday and left it to seed for most of the evening and then overnight, when I woke up in the morning it still wasn’t done seeding–this was like 8hrs plus. In the end I had to stop because my laptop was overheating pretty badly. So how long does it usually take to do this? Does it depend on my internet speed or the other person’s?

You can seed forever.

Seeding is like being a server to others so they can download what you have downloaded by uploading the data you downloaded from other that were seeding for you, for them.

It’s your choice to decide when to stop seeding. But if you seed more than you download, it will be good ’cause trackers will see you as seeder which will make your download for torrents faster.

I think you should seed at least for a week then stop. It depends on your internet connection & and if it’s limited or slow or etc. So if it was a very slow connection set upload limit to 20 KB/s, if it was normal or fast then don’t set upload limit. But don’t take ”week” seriously, you can seed as much as you want & as much as you like the torrent or dislike it but the ”week” is a good average.

It depends on your connection speed and the file size. You can seed as long as you like, but if you want to be fair, seed until a ratio of 1.000, which means that you’ve given back what you’ve downloaded. You don’t have to leave your computer on during this. You’ll start seeding again when you start your torrentclient.

I have a slow connection myself and I do tend to download large files from time to time and it can take a while to reach the ratio I aim for, but I don’t usually leave the computer on overnight.
